Who I Am
I am a New Jersey boy that fell in love with the great outdoors of Utah. I am an environmentalist at heart that has aligned my work with my convictions. I entered the energy field my very first week as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. Craig Priest asked to review an energy audit Hill AFB completed by an ESCO. That first week shaped the rest of my career. Craig became a lifelong friend as well as a work colleague 2-+ years. That first week also led me to Patti and Mark Case who later became my bosses and partners with ETC Group.
My engineering work has taken me to probably ½ of the US States as well as Europe and Asia. I have worked on military installations, colleges, hospitals, asphalt plants, coal mines, ski resorts, bobsled tracks, gravel pits, and who knows how many other industries. For the first 15 years of my career, I did very hardcore engineering. I measured power, temperature, pressure on all sorts of systems (chiller plants, asphalt plants, AHUs, snowmaking, etc). I did my own flow traverses on asphalt plant exhaust stacks and coal mine ventilation shafts. I have performed dozes of combustion tests. As my career progressed, I have maintained my technical involvement.
However, for the last 15 years of my career I have focused on building teams and a company. I eventually became the president of ETC Group. ETC Group succeeded in transitioning from a consulting company to a full-service energy company. This created a continuous improvement loop where we implemented efficiency measures and learned what worked and didn't work. We then developed one of the leading fault detection and diagnostics software companies (BuildingFit) and the leading MBCx firm. This allowed us to monitor systems over long periods of time and continuously improve operations.
I am driven to identify and implement solutions that deliver persistent savings, but also have the ability for continuous improvement. My goal is to simplify the complex for others.
My knowledge of how buildings and systems use energy allows me to see how they COULD use energy. This is critical as we adapt to building electrification and using intermittent electricity sources. I love collaborating with teams trying to find solutions to our changing industry. I don’t use the term “Challenges” as I see the future as “Opportunities”.
